Feedback Challenge Results

The Challenge

Last week I wrote an article called, Feedback is a Gift… Sometimes One We Want to Return. In the article I explained why feedback from your peers, direct reports and even your spouse is a gift. It’s a rare opportunity for objectivity because you get to see yourself from their perspective.

I challenged you to listen for feedback, listen for what the person was really trying to say, and decide on an action as a result of the feedback. How did you do?

My Results

I’ll share my experience with you. I’ve been practicing these techniques for awhile now, but like anything it is good to get back to basics to hone our skills.

  • I received feedback from direct reports that identified ways that I and my department can improve communication with other departments.
  • One of my direct reports does not feel challenged by his current duties
  • My internal customers are happier with the way we are operating our internal help desk
  • Our yearly summer blockbuster movie outing is important to the guys – they don’t want to miss it

I don’t have an action plan for each point because some require a bit more research, but I am at least aware of them and can look for opportunities to improve.

Your Results

How did you do? What did you learn? Were you able to listen without judgment? Did it strengthen your relationships? If you’re up for it, please share your results by posting a comment.

Benefits

Believe me, this is one of the best things you can do to improve yourself and your relationships. Do you think my folks feel valued when I listen to them and take action on what they say? Do you think they are more likely to come to me with issues in the future? Do you think that helps me as a leader and as a person?

If you missed the challenge, please read the original post and start this week.
