These past several years have been full of change for many of us. Who hasn’t been affected by lost net worth, home values, retirement savings, salary, perceived job security, or even losing your job? It’s scary stuff.
Hopefully your perception has changed. Hopefully you’ve learned that the only security you have is your skills, abilities, and reputation. It’s not very fun to sit and wait for the next reorganization is it? It’s not very pretty watching your coworkers compromise their values as they angle to win the job lottery is it?
Most of the people I know who’ve left their “secure” jobs have gone out on their own or joined a startup. They’ve done so because they know their value, and are tired of trading “security” for working in a cube, living in fear of the next layoff, and sick of being treated badly. They’re betting on themselves, and while that can be scary, at least you’re the one making the decisions.
If you’re happy in your current job, then stay, but if not, don’t be afraid to join the many thousands of us who have decided that we’re not going to wait for someone to give us a job.
Next time, I’ll post about the good and bad that come with working at a startup or working for yourself. Leave a comment or hit me up on Twitter to let me know if you have any questions.
