Its the Simple Things

The best times don’t cost much money, just a bit of our time.
Think about the best times of your life and I bet they will involve moments with people you love. For me, that’s been time in the kitchen with my mother, grandma, partners, sister, nieces, and nephews. There have been many moments with smiles, laughs, and love. Other moments would be fishing with my father, going to the Dam store with my grandpa or uncles, or just listening to their stories of a rowdy childhod.
I was reminded of this yesterday when we took a day trip to one of our gorgeous state parks.
We hiked a short way to a frozen waterfall. When we got to the top of the falls, we saw a young family with three small children snug in their colorful winter coats, mittens, and hats, sitting on the ice enjoying hot chocolate.
It was just a couple of hours in a park on a Saturday afternoon, but I’m sure they will remember those hours as an example of what life is about. And it only cost a few dollars for the park fee and a thermos of hot chocolate.
It was a lovely day for us as well. We got to spend time exploring Minnesota and its many lovely small towns. We got to go for a hike, have lunch in the van, and read (Rilke in my case). The dogs got out of the house and got stamps for their passports. And it only cost the price of gas and a renewal of our annual park pass.
Get out there and spend time with the people you love!
